Reflection

Depression can carry anger, grief, and loss of meaning.

Depression is often described as sadness, but it may also appear as fatigue, withdrawal, numbness, irritability, self-criticism, or the sense that ordinary life has become distant. A person may continue to function while feeling privately cut off from vitality, desire, or hope.

Psychodynamic therapy considers depression in relation to history, attachment, loss, disappointment, anger, shame, and the ways a person has learned to protect themselves. Depression may conceal grief that has not found language or anger that has not felt possible to know.

In psychoanalytic psychotherapy, treatment proceeds through attention to what is said, what is avoided, what repeats, and what becomes clearer over time. This work can help a person understand the meanings carried by sadness, withdrawal, and self-criticism.

Nicole Glass, MA, LCPC offers depression therapy in Chicago and throughout Illinois for adults seeking careful psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
