Reflection
Identity and culture are part of the clinical material.
Culturally responsive therapy does not treat identity as a side note. Race, culture, class, language, belonging, exclusion, family history, and social life shape how a person comes to understand themselves and others.
Psychoanalytic therapy can attend to the inner life without separating it from the social world. Shame, pride, anger, grief, desire, silence, and self-protection may all be connected to the conditions in which a person has had to become themselves.
Treatment can hold complexity without reducing a person to a single category or experience. It offers a place to speak about identity, relationships, anxiety, depression, and self-worth with depth and care.
Nicole Glass, MA, LCPC offers culturally responsive psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adults in Chicago, Hyde Park, and throughout Illinois.
